reating the Sassy Gentleman: Practical Styling and Care Tips

Maybe men’s closet choices aren’t as varied as women’s, but that doesn’t mean men can’t be equally chic and stylish. Next, we’ll share some key men’s grooming and fashion advice!

Men’s Fashion and Grooming Tips

It’s an accepted fact that women invest more time in grooming and styling. But to put it another way, women are willing to spend more time on grooming and styling. Proper grooming and styling should be a part of everyone’s daily life, and the same goes for men.

Men want to look good too

In fact, men want to look good just as much as women do. But often, men don’t know where to start. If their closet is filled with clothes that don’t fit, they may prefer to settle for less than a complete replacement. What’s more, shopping is a huge burden for many men, and they often don’t want to bother. But as with any goal one wants to achieve, it takes a corresponding amount of knowledge and effort. So today we’re going to talk about all the basic things you need to know about grooming and styling. I tend to start with the basics because firstly, men prefer simple and straightforward content and secondly, simple advice is easier to follow. For now, I’m offering guidance in the hopes that you’ll then pay it forward. Without further ado, here’s the guide every man needs:

A well-crafted dress code foundation

First, start with some basic items such as casual shirts and formal shirts (whether short or long-sleeved). Choose solid and plain colors over patterns and prints. Make sure you have basic shades like black, white and gray in your closet. There’s nothing wrong with keeping some of your favorite pieces, but only wear them for appropriate occasions, such as a night of drinks with friends.

If you favor basic t-shirts, you should find the neckline style that works best for you. Do you look more suited to a crew neck, a v-neck or a low neck? As for the fit, avoid styles that are too tight or too loose.

Should I tie it into my pants or wear it outside?

This depends on your style of dress and the specific occasion. For casual occasions, you usually don’t need to tie your shirt into your pants. However, for formal or business occasions, you will most likely need to wear a button-down shirt, in which case you should of course tie your shirt into your pants and make sure to wear it with an appropriate belt.

Choosing the right bottoms

Choosing your bottoms will be a lot easier, as you only need a few key pieces. Getting a pair of khaki shorts, a reliable pair of jeans and a pair of formal pants will suffice. Avoid work shorts unless you need to do chores. They are bulky and never look favorable. Opting for khaki shorts or other casual shorts will be better. For men, the fit of the pants is especially important, especially around the waist, hips, crotch and thigh areas. Of course, the length of the pants also needs attention. Finding the right size may require you to look in different stores. Sometimes, when the waist fits, the crotch and hips may be a little baggy; sometimes, the opposite may be true. So, be patient to find the right size of pants and once you do, you can move on to that store. As for skinny jeans? Unfortunately, not everyone will look good in them, even though men’s legs are usually thinner than women’s. Additionally, skinny pants can be too tight and lead to health problems there for men.

Footwear should also be carefully chosen

Just like choosing pants, you should invest in a few key pieces in your shoe wardrobe. I recommend that you own a pair of boat shoes (perfect for shorts), a pair of loafers, and a pair of formal shoes. With these three pairs, you’re basically good to go. A couple other tips though: please don’t wear socks with sandals. Don’t ever do that. As for formal shoes, find shoes that fit your feet perfectly. Shoes that look too big or too small can be ugly.

Have at least one perfect suit

Every man should have at least one perfect suit, preferably in navy or grey, and preferably tailored for a perfect fit.

Wear the right accessories as well

If you wear a suit, make sure your tie color is not the same as your shirt color. The general rule is to pick a tie in a contrasting color. As you probably already know, belts and shoes should always match. If you have a brown belt, wear brown shoes. It’s simple. Choose the right socks for different occasions. Don’t wear white socks while wearing formal pants. Don’t wear formal socks when wearing khaki shorts either. I’m sure you’ve got the point here.

Men’s care is equally important

Now, if you’ve got the right outfit, then you can only really pull off the look if you look the part as well. Gentlemen, you need to take care of yourselves. Your body hair grows in different directions and at a surprisingly fast rate. You have to keep up (because looking like a werewolf is not the goal). Here are the basic care tips you must know:

Men’s care

The one thing you really need to invest in when it comes to care is a good barber. Whether you intend to grow a beard or prefer the look of a clean shave, you’ll need it. For beards and mustaches, you need a good trimmer. There’s nothing wrong with growing a beard, as long as you take care of it and don’t look like you’ve spent a month on the mountain. Your eyebrows need trimming too.
