A procedure to renew the eyes: oculoplastic surgery to eliminate a tired face

For those of us who look perpetually tired, sagging or excess skin under the eyes may be one of the main reasons. If you’re struggling with droopy eyelids, sagging eyes, or just want to look more refreshed, Kirkland, WA facial plastic surgeon Dr. Daniel J. Libertz may have the solution: oculoplastic surgery.

What is oculoplastic surgery?

What this complex term means is actually a surgical revitalization procedure for the eyelids, which can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both.

Dr. Libertz explains, “Upper eyelid plastic surgery focuses on loose or puffy upper eyelids, while lower eyelid plastic surgery targets excess skin, puffiness, or laxity in the lower eyelids.” Both procedures usually improve the appearance of the eyes, making them look less tired.

The difference between upper and lower eyelids

Unlike a facelift, which involves some degree of skin tightening or even deeper treatment of the face, oculoplastic surgery is usually all about removing excess skin and skillfully hiding surgical scars. However, upper eyelid surgery tends to be quicker and simpler.

Dr. Libertz says, “Upper eyelid plastic surgery is relatively simple: under local anesthesia, excess skin is removed from the upper eyelid and the incision is closed with sutures.” Sometimes it may also be necessary to remove excess fat. The entire procedure takes about 20 minutes and is accompanied by minimal pain. The sutures are removed within a week and any bruising and swelling usually dissipates within 10 to 14 days.”

On the other hand, rejuvenation of the lower eyelids is more complicated. That’s because it typically involves dealing with deeper fat pads to accurately reshape the sunken portions of the eye sockets, it’s more difficult to hide scars, and in general, the anatomy of the lower eyelids is more difficult to deal with.

Dr. Libertz notes, “Lower eyelid plastic surgery can be more complex and may require general anesthesia to ensure patient comfort and safety.” Surgical incisions are made below the lower eyelashes or on the inside of the eyelids to remove excess fat and skin. The recovery period for lower eyelid plastic surgery is similar to that of the upper eyelids – any bruising and swelling usually dissipates within one to two weeks.”
