Internationally, there’s been a lot of buzz about the cosmetic topic of Volufiline, a plant-based “filler-like” ingredient that gives skin a fuller appearance. Here’s what we know about this popular skincare ingredient, including a dermatologist’s perspective and our favorite products.
What is Volufiline?
Volufiline, also known as motherwort, is a patented natural plant extract developed by the French company Sederma. You may be familiar with Matrixyl-3000, a peptide powerhouse created by Sederma. “Volufiline has a similar cosmetic effect to lip fillers and helps promote fullness,” says Chelsea Scott, co-founder of Beauty Spy. She discovered this unique ingredient while working with Korean beauty brand Dr. Tree.” Studies have shown that Volufiline also stimulates and promotes lipid storage, which increases the volume of adipose tissue. In short, it helps to make skin fuller and smoother, improve skin elasticity and reduce wrinkles.Dr. Tree uses the ingredient in its full range of products, including moisturizers, masks, skin treatments and body treatments.
However, outside of Asia and Europe, this ingredient is not yet widely used.” I haven’t found any other products that use this ingredient other than those from Asian companies,” Scott said. Scott says that’s why she co-founded Beauty Spy to bring these products to the U.S. market.
Clinical trials
When Sederma released its clinical trial data, the overseas media were quick to pick up the story.” Women were so excited that they started applying it all over their bodies to help smooth and plump their skin,” Scott said. Scott said, “This is a natural way to enlarge breasts and buttocks, although not as dramatic as cosmetic surgery. However, clinical trials have shown that daily topical application of this formula on the skin results in significant improvements. There are no known side effects. The study was conducted on female volunteers with smaller breasts. The study suggests that the breast enhancement effect will gradually appear after 28 and 56 consecutive days of using Volufiline at a concentration of 5%.
Volufiline is discussed by dermatologists
“Although the Sederma Labs study was interesting and convincing, the clinical study was small, with only 28 subjects. And at the end of the trial, there was only a slight improvement in breast volume,” said Jenny Hopkins, MD, a dermatologist in Monroe, LA.” There is a lack of large-scale clinical studies to confirm Volufiline’s true effectiveness and safety. As a result, dermatologists have reservations about the ingredient’s efficacy, believing that more research is needed to support its claims.
However, some Asian and European beauty brands have begun using Volufiline as an ingredient in their products. These products typically include face and body skincare products designed to provide plumping and firming effects. In the Asian market, some products using Volufiline claim to improve the fullness of the breasts and buttocks.
