Blonde Care Tips: How to Avoid Heat Damage for Long-Lasting Shine

Several years ago, I complained to my barber that my light blonde hair seemed to be becoming more prone to brassy tones and was losing its original luster.

“Uh,” he responded, “it looked like it was toasted.

A sudden inspiration struck my mind. Indeed, my hair looked like it had suffered heat damage. Despite the fact that I had been using all kinds of conditioning oils and hair nourishments at home to maintain the cleanliness and brilliance of my flaxen hair, it still had a slight tinge of orange color to it, and it finally dawned on me why.

I started deliberately lowering the temperature settings on my styling tools, and even though they were already set low, my fragile strands still struggled to withstand it intact.

The right mix of low-temperature styling with the use of heat protection sprays was crucial in maintaining my hair color from going out of style and preventing it from transforming into an unflattering orange.

If you’ve also done a pick color and are confused as to why your blonde brown strands are looking a little different, it’s worth taking a closer look at your daily styling routine to see if you’re accidentally causing heat damage.

Yellowish blonde strands should remain healthy, but the tone is just slightly off. Hair that may have suffered heat damage, on the other hand, will show a tinge of orange, be rough to the touch, appear dry, and may even have frizz at the ends.

If you suspect your hair has suffered damage from heat styling, a deeply nourishing conditioning mask is a great way to repair your hair. Check out this article for a list of my favorite hair care products!

If you think your hair is otherwise healthy and the brassiness may not be all due to the heat, then you may want to consider using a stronger cleansing shampoo and the occasional purple conditioner to help neutralize the yellow tones.

A few of my personal favorites for heat protection hair care products include Bumble and Bumble Base Cream, Dae Agave Heat Drying Spray, and the Kerastase Resistance line of Leave-In Heat Protecting Conditioners.
